ARETHA FRANKLIN - They say that you should never say never but in this case I think it applies. We will never enjoy a lifetime of such a voice or an artist of Aretha Franklin's talent again. From her first recordings at 13 years old until her performance, aged 73, for then President Barack Obama, whom she brought to tears, and first lady Michelle Obama at the 38th annual Kennedy Center Honors at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC on Dec. 7, 2015 (video above) the gospel girl from Detroit has amazed us with her grace for 60 years.

Aretha's voice and songs gave power to women's rights of all races. For example my English Mum is now 81, the very first album (LP) she bought for herself to listen to in the late 60s was an Aretha album, she still has it in Kent, England. I grew up hearing that album in the house. Later living in Los Angeles I saw Aretha return to Los Angeles's Hollywood Bowl on Friday 27th June 2009, after a gap of 37 years, literally the day after Michael Jackson died, where she stopped mid-show for a moment of silence to remember him, then continue as a 67 year old soulful lady to deliver her classic hits Respect, Freeway, Chain of Fools and more with her once in a lifetime voice, still powerful and filled with her rich gospel melody.

Her three night performance with King Curtis and the Kingpins as her band at the Fillmore West in San Francisco March 1971 is cemented in legendary folklore, the video link for the concert where she famously duets with Ray Charles is below. Immerse yourself in Aretha Franklin's musical magic from that performance to musicianship behind the piano. She had everything in abundance. Incredible considering she already had two children by time she was 16 - what a force of human nature. We ain't never, no no never had a female artist to love like Aretha Louise Franklin, truly a Deeper Love.

Closing with this from Billy Preston who performed with Aretha on many nights including the legendary San Francisco gigs at the Fillmore West once said of the Queen of Soul - "I don't care what they say about Aretha, She can be hiding out in her house in Detroit for years. She can go decades without taking a plane or flying off to Europe. She can cancel half her gigs and infuriate every producer and promoter in the country. She can sing all kinds of jive-ass songs that are beneath her. She can go into her diva act and turn off the world. But on any given night, when that lady sits down at the piano and gets her body and soul all over some righteous song, she'll scare the shit out of you. And you'll know-you'll swear-that she's still the best fuckin' singer this fucked-up country has ever produced." Amen Aretha amen..
